Ember
How much longer shall we reconnoiter?
Back and forth, to and fro
Running o’er our plans like Michael Angelo?
What should have been
What should have been done
To have avoided the heart’s Verdun?
To come to a point
Whose inevitability (at least I) knew
But we still tried to eschew.
You were better than the rest
Even kinder than Gretchen,
So, I let you in.
I, waking, wish you were here
Falling asleep, glad you are not
For every morning after I was distraught.
I wish you could see my kids
Though they helped me leave
But your time I will not thieve.
As a poet you know
Cigarettes and rhyme
Helps process lost time.
So,
How much longer shall we reconnoiter?
Back and forth, to and fro
Running o’er our plans like Michael Angelo?
What should have been
What should have been done
To have avoided the heart’s Verdun?
Nothing.
I would not go back,
Even if pain would now lack.
